Stz’uminus fights back to threat in its waters
Tuesday August 17 @ 3:10pm
The Stz’uminus First Nation community is holding an emergency meeting tonight (Aug. 17) to discuss its next steps in the battle with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans over geoduck harvesting in the waters on Kulleet Bay.
Chief John Elliott said the meeting was called after community members heard news that the Underwater Harvesters Association (UHA) was planning to resume harvesting when DFO opens the fishery later this week.
“Already our people are laying gill nets and other underwater devices to foil the fishery,” he said. “We also have plans to erect markers around our waters so that everyone knows that this is a no-go area.
“The community is outraged that DFO refuses to consult with us on taking resources from our waters. But what surprises me is is the level of support we are getting from First Nations around the coast as well as non-native fishers.
“We should have quite a reception if the UHA attempts to return to Kulleet Bay. But I am hoping that DFO will come to its senses and realize that a commercial fishery on our doorstep is not in the best interests of anyone.”
Earlier today, Chief Elliott put out a call for boaters who support the Stz’uminus stand for access to resources in their waters to meet at Shell Beach at 7 a.m. before the flotilla makes its way 3 kms along the coast to Kulleet Bay.
The chief said that as with the previous protest on Aug. 9, the Stz’uminus protests will be peaceful and non-confrontational. “The onus is on DFO to keep this fishery closed. Our fight is not with the harvesters, but with the lack of proper consultation by fisheries officials.”

Water Shortage
Tuesday July 27 @ 10:50am
As community members are aware, we are currently experiencing a very dry and hot summer. One of the consequences of the weather is that it puts our supply of fresh water under some stress. This is particularly the case on IR #13. As a result, residents of #13 are requested to restrict their use of water. Unnecessary water usage may result in water rationing if the current weather conditions continue. Residents are asked not use garden sprinklers (hand water only), wash cars or fill outdoor pools. If you suspect that you have a water leak (including a dripping tap), you are asked to contact Peter Aleck or Peter Seymour at the Administration Offices 250-245-7155(Ext 228 or Ext 238). Your cooperation is greatly appreciated…SFN Administration

Dunsmuir Island - Press Release
Tuesday March 2 @ 11:09am
The Stz’uminus First Nation is deeply concerned with recent decisions of the Province of British Columbia regarding the granting of a variety of tenures on lands and foreshores that are culturally and historically significant to the Stz’uminus people. While the Province preaches consultation, its practices send a much different message.
Dunsmuir Island, located in Ladysmith Harbour, has long played an important role in the traditions of Stz’uminus and contains a 5000 year old burial site. In 1877 Dunsmuir Island was taken by the Federal government’s Joint Reserve Commission and over time has since come into the possession of a developer… To read more of this press release click Here!
